Licking River Northern Ky. American Historical events

The World famous Licking river c.320 mi.long, rising in East Kentucky South East of Salyersville and flowing North West to the Ohio river opposite of Cincinnati.

It was an important means of travel to Indians and pioneers and later a busy trade route. The river has been the setting of more than one historical event;at its mouth (seen in pic) in 1780 gathered George Rogers Clark's frontiersmen for their march up the Little Miami ,and the Battle of Blue Licks with Tecumseh(only a young boy at the time) 1782 occurred in the Licking valley and was a strategic win for the Indian forces at the time and Daniel Boone famous frontiersman and folk hero was captured by the Shawnee Warrior ambush . This event hardened pioneers and The United States Governments refusal to recognize his principle that all the Indian land was the common possession of all the Indian tribes and the land could not rightly be ceded by,or purchased from,an individual tribe.Tecumseh set out to join the tribes of the Old Northwest, the South, and the Eastern Mississippi valley. His plan failed with the defeat of his brother the Shawnee Prophet, at Tippecanoe. Although the battle was a draw it marked the end of Indian war. In the War of 1812 Tecumseh allied with the British and was made a Brigadier General. He led a large group of Indians in the battle of Fort Meigs, covered general Proctors retreat after Perry's victory on Lake Erie , and lost his life at the Battle of the Thames.Tecumseh had great ability as an organizer and is considered one of the outstanding Indians in American History .
