Flying Pigs .. an icon of the city since the early days of river town settlement. Along the banks of the Ohio paddle river boats swelled the trade and commerce . The city's geography and location (besides it' native pop.) and obvious connection southward all became major economic advantages. The increase of local ranchers and farmers ability to trade and sell goods all over the America's gave the city its icon and nicknames the pigs would be driven by cowboys down the "bloody run" was loud and kicked up dust on the cow and pig run's. People in the inner city hearing this (butchers &dock/canal workers too).would all look up near Eden park area only to see a large herd being driven southward down current Reading rd down to the canal boats that were waiting at the central canal to take the stock to meat and butcheries in camp washington. around central canal. Now central ave. dwtn. Cincinnati . Everyone would see the pigs to what looked like they were flying down the hill from all the dust to the viewers and waiting workers viewed "The Flying Pigs" coming down the hills to the canals . A local family ranch in the O Bryon area Williams estate and Wallace farm near Hyde Park provided the pigs and cattle almost daily this was repeated . Reading and montgomery rd. being just a dirt cattle run used by local livestock providing families in these areas down to the canals then the butchers then out to feed the country thru the river trade.
